Today, I worked on a new song. I think I completed the arrangement and lyrics. I really like it. I’m serving at the restaurant this evening.

The third song on Ellwood EP is called Smoke And Flames. It’s pretty straight-forward. I like it. I had such a hard time writing the verses for some reason. The melody and structure felt really specific and I felt like I had to make the most out of very little. The very first lines “years go by…” are just acknowledging where I came from. The “single light” refers to two different places/communities that I won’t mention here. These places were on opposite ends of my home town, but they both offered me peace and stability during a confusing adolescence. As I grew older, I was able to see those communities for what they really were. With “sleepless nights”, we jump forward to my time in Goleta with Sarah. The “bad news” is alluding to the wildfires of 2017 that put us both out of work and made an already difficult situation feel hopeless. The chorus of this song is one of the greatest sections I’ve written to date. It’s straight forward, so I won’t break it down. The last section sort of makes the rest of the song come alive for me. Fires burn. And hearts will yearn. But you’re the one that I love.

Ellwood EP will be available everywhere on Friday :)

Years go by

A single light

Out there on the edge of town

At least they tried

I was just a kid

But darkness has a way

Of letting you in

Sleepless nights

A longing true

Walked around so aimless

‘Neath that Ellwood moon

I didn’t want to leave

But bad news has a way

Of getting under your skin

I told you not to come here babe

I told you not to follow me

Through the smoke and flames

Through the blackened hills

God knows we lost everything

Honey you’ve got the thicker skin

I don’t know how to do this

How to let you down

You know it’s a lonely Los Angeles

Four years in

A few too late

I packed up all my things

And drove down to LA

But I don’t know a thing

If I did I wouldn’t have left you

All alone there

I told you not to come here babe

I told not to follow me

Through the smoke and flames

Through the blackened hills

God knows we lost everything

Honey you’ve got the thicker skin

I don’t know how to do this

How to let you down

You know it’s a lonely Los Angeles

Fires burn

And hearts will yearn

But you’re the one that I love
